It’s not a particularly strong statement to say that The Matrix Trilogy was a mixed bag of films.

I’m one of the few who didn’t completely hate The Matrix Reloaded or The Matrix Revolutions, and felt - similarly to the maligned Star Wars prequels - that each film had parts that worked really well, but were mired by other portions that outright failed.  It didn’t help that each followed some of the most innovative movies of all time.

Even since then, I’ve absolutely loved the output of the Wachowskis - their production work on V for Vendetta, and their amazing Speed Racer and Cloud Atlas adaptations, are some of the finest films of the 2000s, but the box office hasn’t followed.

In turn - say the rumor mongers at Latino Review - Warner Bros is working with the duo for a brand new trilogy of Matrix films, to take on the big franchises of Star Wars, Avatar and Marvel in 2017.  They say that the films will show the birth of the Matrix itself, and the animated prequels will NOT necessarily be canon.

It’s clearly early days in this project, and if true, I admit that my interest is there to hear out the ideas and see what the Wachowski’s have planned. At the same time, it’s a shame that they couldn’t continue to build amazing, unique films, and had to return to that which brought them to the dance.
