The worst kept secret in gaming has officially been revealed today, as WB Games released the above video for MultiVersus, a Free to Play platform fighter coming for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox and PC.

I’m not sure if this is a case of parallel thought, but much how Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl said, “What if Super Smash Bros., but Nickelodeon?", MultiVersus asks this perhaps more cynically, “What if Super Smash Bros. but all of the IP we, Warner Bros, hold?"

And you can see in the gameplay showcased here so far — DC Comics heroes like Batman and Wonder Woman intermingle with cartoon classics like Tom and Jerry and Bugs Bunny, but there are some curveballs in the mix like Game of Thrones’ Arya Stark. It’s basically like the backgrounds of Space Jam: A New Legacy.

The game is announced as Free to Play, which makes me wary for the way they will intend to fleece gamers for additional cash, but if the idea is just “Pay for new characters and levels", I could consider it.

All and all, I have two primary thoughts right now:

  1. Exactly how deep into the Warner Bros. Catalog can we go? Can I wreck shit online as Mr. Nutterbutter from Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Tony Soprano, or hell, Danny Ocean from Ocean’s 11?
  2. If Disney wanted to do this with their catalog — Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars, etc. — this would basically blow both the WB and Nickelodeon options out of the water, and could succeed where Disney Infinity failed.

We’ll have to see how this plays out.

MultiVersus arrives in 2022.
