Nakatomi Plaza Says So Long

Over the past few years, I’ve been very fortunate to have been able to get somewhat involved with the independent music scene, via a few creative outlets of mine.

I suppose then, it’s somewhat ironic that I haven’t been able to feature music on as regular a basis on here as much as I’d like.

Never the less, I thought I’d take the time to spotlight one of my favorite musical discoveries of the past few years, a band named Nakatomi Plaza.

Mixing strong riffs with attention grabbing vocals that range from a whisper to an animalistic growl and producing more pure rocking sound than a three-piece should be able to do, they had my attention from the first time I heard their album Unsettled.  It’s a bummer then, that after ten years of hard work and touring, they’re wrapping up as a band with a final tour this fall.

However, it’s not time to be sad, as they’re going out with a bang.

As sort of a thank you, the band has decided to release their final album, titled Ghosts, either absolutely free or on a “Pay What You Like” basis, available on their website (linked below) between August 18th and August 30th.  I intend to snatch a copy myself this evening, and then make a personal point to see them on their last tour (playing here in Baltimore on September 3rd with the always awesome Avec).

I’ve never had the pleasure of seeing this band live, but if their albums are any indication, I highly recommend that if you’re reading this, and seeing them is an option, you make the trip.

Here’s the schedule for their final tour:

AUG 31 – New Brunswick, NJ @ The Court Tavern w/ Disarmor
SEP 01 – Washington, DC @ TBA w/ Trophy Wife and Avec
SEP 02 – Baltimore, MD @ The Talking Head w/ Avec and Lingos Clamore

SEP 04 – Louisville, KY @ Skull Alley w/ Desolation Wilderness, Attica! Attica!, and Alcohawk

THE WOLFMAN Finally Shows His Face!

The troubled path of Benicio del Toro’s starring turn as The Wolfman seems to finally have come to a positive head, as we finally have the first trailer and set of stills from the Joe Johnston’s helmed flick.

While the flick looks interesting, with a great cast including Anthony Hopkins (who looks almost CG in the still released), Emily Blunt and Hugo Weaving; one has to wonder if Universal’s near constant pushing back of the release date is a sign of no-confidence in the film.

Either way, we’ll know for sure when the flick hits screens on February 12, 2010.

Six New AVATAR Shots Bring Forth “AVATAR DAY”

At 10am EST, the first trailer for Avatar will arrive on

Tomorrow, August 21st, 18 minutes of Avatar footage will be shown to fans across the country (I’ll be one of them, with my impressions appearing here, and elsewhere…).

So while the last shreads of the veil of secrecy are up, Fox decided this was a great time to release 6 new stills from the film, which ultimately tell us nothing.

You’ve got Sigourney Weaver looking great for 60, Michelle Rodriguez looking bummed out about something, some military dude with some sweet head scars, and Sam Worthington wearing a biker t-shirt and having a lot more hair than usual.

Oh! And an awesome pic of airships, which I’ve used as the header image for this post.

No idea. But we’ll know more in just a few hours. Or by the time you read this.

Go Team Venture Into Season 4!

Fresh off the streaming site goodness of [adult swim].com, comes our first look at the fourth season of The Venture Bros.

I’ve been a fan of Venture Bros since it started, but I truly think the series hit it’s stride last season, taking a show that started mostly as a Jonny Quest parody and turning into a complete analysis of growing up as a failure and dealing with one’s own mediocrity…while battling super villains, of course.

Season 4 looks to be just as great, and I can’t wait for it to air this fall!
