Red Band Trailer for James Gunn’s THE SUICIDE SQUAD

From writer/director James Gunn comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ superhero action adventure “The Suicide Squad,” featuring a collection of the most degenerate delinquents in the DC lineup. The Super-Villains have a chance to get out of jail but only by joining the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. With a team made up of Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn, how will this collection of cons work together?

After 24 Years, Marvel Leaves Diamond To Distribute Via Penguin Random House

Publishers Weekly:

In a move that will likely transform the distribution of comics periodicals in North America, Penguin Random House Publisher Services has reached an agreement with Marvel to distribute its periodical comics and graphic novels to the comics shop market, also known as the direct market.

The two companies have signed an exclusive, worldwide multi-year sales and distribution agreement for Marvel’s comics—including individual issues, trade collections, and graphic novels both newly published and backlist—to the direct market. PRHPS officially begins its distribution to direct market retailers for Marvel titles on October 1. The move marks a major change in the U.S. comics distribution market, which Diamond Comic Distributors has long dominated.

Unreal! I mean, DC Comics made a similar move last year, moving all distribution in house, but Diamond has had such a monopolistic lock on the comic book industry that I am absolutely stunned such a change has occurred.

Wonder what this means for the longevity of the brick-and-mortar comic store…

JOHN WICK’s Chad Stahelski Developing GHOST OF TSUSHIMA Movie with Sony

Deadline:

Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions are developing a film adaptation of the hugely successful action adventure game Ghost of Tsushima, with Chad Stahelski attached to direct. The game recently crossed a massive milestone of selling over 6.5 million copies since its July 2020 debut.

The game is developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment and centers around samurai warrior Jin Sakai, the last surviving member of his clan, who must set aside the traditions that have shaped him as a warrior to wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Tsushima.

Ghost of Tsushima was one of my favorite games of last year, and was an absolute love letter to Japanese samurai films, so when you add one of the best action directors going today, I’m very excited.

Now, will it break the curse of bad video game movies? Too early to say…but all the right tools are there.

Update: Now Sucker Punch Productions Game Director Nate Fox has chimed in with some notes on the movie:

A Ghost of Tsushima movie is in the works! The idea of translating our game into a new medium is exciting, and we’re intrigued by the possibilities. We’ve all been brought to tears in a movie theater surrounded by strangers. (Thanks a lot, E.T.) We’ve all gone to a movie on opening night when the crowd is so excited that they cheer as the lights go down. It’s a group experience that isn’t replicated anywhere else. To think that we could sit in the theater someday watching Jin Sakai up on the big screen is amazing. We’d all relive his tense transformation into the Ghost from a whole new vantage point.

We are happy to partner with Sony Pictures to make this happen. And Jin is in very good hands with the film’s director. Chad Stahelski created something special with John Wick. His vision for what could be, backed up by years of experience, combined to create some of the finest action scenes ever created. If anyone could bring to life the razor-sharp tension of Jin’s katana combat, it’s Chad Stahelski.

Pierce Brosnan Joins BLACK ADAM as Dr. Fate

Variety:

Pierce Brosnan is taking on his first role as a superhero. The actor has been cast as Dr. Fate in DC and New Line’s “Black Adam” alongside Dwayne Johnson, who is playing the titular role.

Dr. Fate, also known as Kent Nelson, is a founding member of the Justice Society who gains superpowers through putting on the magical Helmet of Fate. The casting of Brosnan completes the lineup for the Justice Society of America, with Aldis Hodge playing Hawkman, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher and Quintessa Swindell taking on Cyclone.

“Black Adam” follows the story of the anti-hero of the same name, played by Johnson. The character of Black Adam first appeared in DC Comics in the 1940s as a power-corrupt villain, and slowly became an anti-hero by the 2000s, known for his disregard of rules and conventions.

For those not super familiar with DC Comics ephemera, here’s a quick analogy:

Dr. Fate is to DC Comics what Doctor Strange is to Marvel Comics 1

All that being said, I refuse to believe that Black Adam or The Flash (which also had casting, er, re-casting news today) is a real movie until it’s actually playing in front of me.

  1. Though, Dr. Fate came first and has a cool helmet.
