This week, the first reviews for Cars 2 started to hit, and in a rare instance for Pixar, they’re generally pretty poor.

Given the fact that I wasn’t a fan of the first film, I can’t say I’m all that surprised, but as a Pixar devotee,  I’m rather disappointed.  I guess that’s why it’s a good thing that they’re getting us right into anticipating the next film….Brave.

At one time titled The Bear and the Bow, this is Pixar’s first film with a female lead, and is set in the Scottish Highlands.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Set in the mystical Scottish Highlands, Brave stars Kelly Macdonald as Merida, the princess of a kingdom ruled by King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson). An unruly daughter and an accomplished archer, Merida one day defies a sacred custom of the land and inadvertently brings turmoil to the kingdom. In an attempt to set things right, Merida seeks out an eccentric old Wise Woman (Julie Walters) and is granted an ill-fated wish. Also figuring into Merida’s quest — and serving as comic relief — are the kingdom’s three lords: the enormous Lord MacGuffin (Kevin McKidd), the surly Lord Macintosh (Craig Ferguson), and the disagreeable Lord Dingwall (Robbie Coltrane).
Sounds really great, right? The teaser trailer is supposed to be attached to Cars 2 (so we might see it online by the end of the weekend), but we have the first poster, above.  Very strong, kinda dark artwork. Very different for Pixar, and I'm very very intrigued.

Brave hits theaters on June 22nd, 2012.
