I thought it was crazy enough earlier today when Disney announced a Fifth and Sixth Pirates of the Carribbean film, but I guess Dreamworks just wants to steal the title of “Family Film Studio With Craziest Expectations for Extended Success.”

In an interview with movie-mag Empire, Dreamworks head Jeffrey Katzenberg (former chairman at Disney no less) laid out future plans for the current batch of Dreamworks Animated franchises.

Amongst the titles revealed:

  • Two more sequels to Madagascar, taking the series to 4 installments total, where they will go BACK to New York, and then I guess back to the jungle. Again.
  • Three sequels to How To Train Your Dragon, which I guess isn't that surreal, as the book series is 10 titles long (to date), but with a TV show coming, is just overkill.
  • And if that wasn't ENOUGH, there will eventually be SIX, yes SIX installments to the Kung Fu Panda franchise.
Look, I know I just was giving Dreamworks a LOT of credit for moving forward and becoming a formidable competitor to Pixar, but this is goddamned ridiculous.

The entertainment business is just that, a BUSINESS, but come the heck on, gang - ORIGINAL FILMS CAN SELL TOO. I mean, isn’t that why we loved Kung Fu Panda and How To Train A Dragon in the first place? They were unique titles and stood out amongst the mix.

Don’t make me regret having enjoyed you, Dreamworks. Four Shreks was enough. Develop the new - you have the money for it.
