Yesterday afternoon, the above Mortal Kombat video appeared on YouTube, on the account of “MortalKombatRebirth”, and ever since, the web went APESHIT.

People were speculating up a storm - is it a trailer for a new movie? A teaser for a new game? What’s the idea?!

Well, thanks to Latino Review (who’s full reveal can be read below), an illuminating light has been shone upon this Seven-esq MK video.

It’s a proof of concept short, put together to convince Warner Brothers to fund a new Mortal Kombat film.  Featuring Michael Jai White as “Jacks” and Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade, director Kevin Tancharoen (Fame) seems to already have his cast in mind.

Personally, it looks interesting, but at the same time, feels a bit too removed from the source material.  I’m all for realistic takes on existing properties (and post-Black Dynamite, I’m a BIG Jai White fan), but really? We’re going to serious up one of the most fun/goofy fighting game series ever? It smells a lil' fan fictiony. Speak of the gore all you want, but MK was built on goofy blood and Friendships and other silly stuff.

Considering the INTENSE amount of webhype though? I wouldn’t be surprised to see this new Mortal Kombat film fast-tracked for a 2011-2012 release.
