Christopher Nolan, probably the most important director in Warner Bros' roster since he directed the record breaking Batman sequel The Dark Knight, is now looking to be guiding the hopes and dreams of another DC character.

In surprise news coming out of Hollywood, now that Nolan is working on post production for his Summer release Inception, he not only is working on a script for a 3rd Batman movie, but he is also going to be “mentoring” the development of the next Superman film.

While I’m not sure that Nolan is the best person for the Superman style or aesthetic, I think he has a great knack for translating a comic book to the theatrical world, giving fantastical tales an element of necessary realism.

I’m pleased that he’s not the director for the Superman film, but I certainly think this is a risk taking and eyebrow raising move from Warner Bros.

Will it pan out? We’ll find out soon enough - Warner Bros has to be working on a new Superman film by 2011.
