Despite the bizarre cold shoulder it received from both comic fans and critics alike, 2008’s The Incredible Hulk is most notable for one thing - being the first example of a unified theatrical Marvel universe.

Because of this, it should be no surprise that the director of that flick, Louis Leterrier, has possibly the craziest, and coolest idea for how the proposed Avengers film should be handled, once Iron Man 2, Thor and The First Avenger: Captain America hit screens over the next few years.

Here’s what ol' Louie is thinking…

I’ll tell you my real dream: To work with Joe Johnston and [“Thor" director] Kenneth Branagh and Jon Favreau and make like a triptych. We do four movies. We release them one a month for the summer. Or even every two weeks or three weeks. And the whole summer would be Avengers summer. So we do it the way they make television shows. One story arc but told in installments by different directors. So all of the directors that touch part of the Avengers world would do a part; we could make the movies shorter, maybe less than an hour and a half, and we use the same sets and save Marvel money. I would love to sit around a table with all of them a kick around the story. That’s my dream.

Now, take away the cynical perspective that Hollywood would never do something like this, just based on the logistical hell of it all…but let’s say they did do it: Wouldn’t this be just about the coolest way to close out the Marvel theatrical legacy?  Even if the movies end up being so-so in quality, just for the sheer balls of doing FOUR films, and giving each director the opportunity to close out their arcs…that could be something exciting.

Shame it will probably never happen. Unless Marvel Studios is listening?

Be sure to give the full interview a look, too.  Leterrier really makes it clear how much of a Marvel fan he is/was, and why he was such a great choice to direct the Hulk. Shame the box office didn’t follow his excitement.
