Earlier this year, I was really excited for Funny People.

Mixing my love for the art of stand up with the crudely-sweet filmmaking style of Judd Apatow, it sounded like a can’t miss, even with Adam Sandler as a lead.

However, when the first trailer came out, and it started to look like a sappy pile o' poo, I started to get skeptical.

It seems like the marketing team behind the flick started to feel the backlash early, as they slowly let us into the world of the film via the time tested approach of viral marketing.

They started with the website for Jason Schwartzman’s character’s sitcom Yo Teach!

Then upped it with the website for Aziz Ansari’s character Raaaaaandy, a pitch perfect spoof of comedians like Dane Cook. (Great url, btw)

They even nailed Sandler’s career to the wall with the website for his character George Simmons, where the film clips, movie posters and album covers are disturbingly believable.

Now, as if it were the frosting on a delicious cake, they give us the red band trailer for Funny People, showing there’s more depth to the flick than the sappy cancer plot.

Judd, buddy, you may’ve done it again. We’ll find out for sure on July 31st.
