Still No Idea Who Cap is, BUT WE’VE GOT RED SKULL!

As the search continues to find who will play the first Avenger, Captain America in The First Avenger: Captain America, Marvel Studios is still making moves to cast their movie.  And the latest is a goddamn’d master stroke.

Wearing the red skull of the Red Skull will be non other than go-to awesome villain actor Hugo Weaving.

I can’t say a single bad thing about this casting. It rules SUPER hard, and I can’t wait to see Weaving chew up scenery in this film.  He’s built quite the nerd friendly resume with The Matrix, Lord of the Rings, V for Vendetta and this past February’s remake of The Wolfman, and now Weaving will make his mark in the world of Marvel.

It should rule. Hard.

Chris Nolan Talks SUPERMAN And Yes, BATMAN 3!

After having his name in the rumor mills these past few weeks in regards to both a new Superman film and the highly anticipated third Batman film, Christopher Nolan was uncharacteristically talkative this week, opening up to the Los Angeles Times on the status of both projects.

While the full article is completely worth the time, I thought I’d give you a few of the highlights.

-How did Nolan end up heading up a new Superman project? It was all David Goyer’s fault: “He basically told me, ‘I have this thought about how you would approach Superman,’” Nolan recalled. “I immediately got it, loved it and thought: That is a way of approaching the story I’ve never seen before that makes it incredibly exciting. I wanted to get Emma and I involved in shepherding the project right away and getting it to the studio and getting it going in an exciting way.”

-Nolan will not be directing this new Superman film.

-Superman and Batman will be in separate film universes, which throws out my theory that these films (along with Green Lantern and Flash) would make up a DC Film Universe to counter Marvel Studios.

-The status of Batman 3? Jonathan Nolan is writing the script, and it wraps up the series: “Without getting into specifics, the key thing that makes the third film a great possibility for us is that we want to finish our story,” he said. “And in viewing it as the finishing of a story rather than infinitely blowing up the balloon and expanding the story.”

-Whoever the villain in the third film is, it won’t be Mr. Freeze.

Click through below to read the full article, it’s a heck of a read.

STAN LEE: FUTURE OSCAR WINNER

Stan Lee’s Oscar Campaign from Stan Lee

Ever since the modern series of Marvel Comics films started hitting the screen, a very great tradition began – the cameo appearances of one Stan Lee.

And if you ask Stan, his is an art which has been ignored for far too long.  So watch, if you will, as Mr. Lee makes his play for the first ever Oscar for cameo appearances.

I for one, completely support this measure. I mean, really, how many movies has Stan truly made great? The answer – countless.

GREEN ZONE (2010): A Review

The pass for this screening of Green Zone was provided by B. In addition, this “mini-review” will be appearing in their newspaper. Thanks, guys!

Despite what the director, lead actor and (especially) the trailers may make you believe, Green Zone is anything but the 4th Bourne film.  In fact, if it’s part of any series, it’s part of the seemingly never ending line of political thrillers revolving around the ongoing conflict in Iraq.  Soldiers are just pawns in a game put together by the fat cats in Washington, the public doesn’t know the truth, and honestly, you’ve seen this story told a thousand times before.

You’d think that with a great cast including Matt Damon, Brendan Gleeson, and Amy Ryan, you could at least count on Oscar quality performances, but no, Green Zone’s cast seems to sleepwalk through performances as basic and predictable as the script.  The only bright point seems to be Greg Kinnear, who chews scenery as Clark Poundstone, a member of Pentagon Special Intellegence.  His character is a cut throat political player, and Kinnear seems to revel in every minute he’s on screen.

But the real issues of the film come down to an awkward, action-heavy third act, which seems tacked on to please audiences who need a resolution to a real-life conflict that has yet to have one, and the heavy handed direction of Paul Greengrass.  Look, I loved the shaky feel of the Bourne films too, but not every single scene needs to rock back and forth like they’re at sea.

It all comes down to this – if you’re looking for a great film set against the backdrop of the Iraq conflict this weekend – don’t go see Green Zone. Redbox a copy of The Hurt Locker instead. At least Kathryn Bigelow knows how to set a camera steady.

Second IRON MAN 2 Trailer Makes Me Full Of Happy!

OK, that first Iron Man 2 trailer ruled all kinds of hard.

But the new one? Possibly cooler.

You’ve got Scarlett Johannson looking all sorts of hot (AND DOING A FLYING HEADSCISSORS!~), Sam Rockwell ready and willing to chew up scenery, the first look at the Iron Drones, Mickey Rourke’s Whiplash looking badass with a GREAT bit of villainous dialogue,  the awesome bit where IM and War Machine look calm while the leaves fall, and most importantly…

SUITCASE SUIT! SUITCASE SUIT! SUITCASE SUIT!!!!!

Grab A Taste Of The SCOTT PILGRIM Soundtrack With “Black Sheep”!

If I weren’t psyched enough about Edgar Wright’s adaptation of my favorite comic series ever, Scott Pilgrim, with the release of the film 5 scant months away, the hype and anticipation is starting to ramp up with more media coming from official sources.

Early on in the production of the film, it was revealed that popular Canadian indie rock bands would have their song’s standing in as the music for the bands in the film, appropriate, as they’re indie bands in Canada.

One such band is Metric, serving as the musical interpretation of the villainous Clash at Demonhead.  The song appearing in the film is titled “Black Sheep”, and it first appeared on Metric’s Facebook fan page, but now it’s been uploaded to YouTube for all to listen.

So check it out, and get psyched like I am!

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is scheduled to hit theaters on August 13th.

So How Will Disney Affect Marvel?

Since it’s announcement at the end of last year, the Marvel/Disney merger has been the talk of the internerd, my website included.

But finally, some amazing artists have stepped up to the plate and shown us how the merger may affect some long time favorites, in a stunning photoshop contest from Worth1000.com.

The concept? Hybrid versions of Marvel & Disney characters.

I’ve chosen one of my favorites to feature above, but really, it’s only the tip of the iceberg – I highly recommend you check out the full list of entries!

And So The DC/Marvel Movie Wars Begin

For four decades now, comic book juggernauts Marvel and DC have been in an ongoing war for the love and appreciation of fans worldwide.

I think it’s safe to say that in the world of comics, it’s been a dead heat for years.

But when it comes to the world of movies, Marvel has had the leg up this decade.  Sure, DC and it’s parent Warner Brothers have the most successful comic book movie of all time in 2008’s The Dark Knight, but Marvel has consistently won audiences over since 2002’s Spider-Man, and won even more favor with the launch of Marvel Studios and Iron Man, building a consistent universe across multiple films.

Now that Disney owns Marvel, and is continuing to build their film universe with sequels to Iron Man, the debut of Captain America and Thor, and of course the forthcoming Avengers film, it should come as no surprise that Warner Bros and DC Entertainment are working to counteract Marvel’s silver screen successes with a series of films of their own.

Much like Marvel Studios, the first true test of this new film universe will start with a second stringer character, as Ryan Reynolds stars as Green Lantern, but this past week has sent some rumors across the web which indicates he won’t be alone for long.

Major rumor number one has attached a director to the long anticipated film adaptation of The Flash.  Intended to helm the film? Greg Berlanti.  If his name doesn’t ring a bell, it will soon, as in addition to handling the directing for the Flash, he wrote the script for Green Lantern.  Taking a page out of Marvel’s book by having creative talent involved in multiple films (see Jon Favreau’s involvement in the Avengers films).

If that wasn’t enough, it seems we have some movement on the Superman front, as rumor not only puts the script in the hands of Batman Begins and Dark Knight scribe David S. Goyer, but the new film (titled The Man of Steel) is apparently going to be the directoral debut of Jonah Nolan, brother of Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan, who co-wrote The Dark Knight with Goyer.

I’ve got to say, I’ve never been a huge DC fan, but if these moves do pan out, it’s going to make for quite the series of movies.  But of course, only time will tell if it all pans out.  Me – I’m very excited.
