This past weekend at New York Comic Con, the screams and cries of fans were finally met, as we got our first look at the sequel to 2014’s surprise action classic-in-the-making, John Wick - the appropriately titled John Wick: Chapter 2.

I absolutely fell in love with the first John Wick when I finally saw it, far too late after the fact via HBO. The film lives in such a wonderfully hinted toward universe, a secondary world where hitmen have an entire society of their own. How could I not want to see more of this?

The promotional stills started to hit - including the movie’s superb teaser poster, embedded as the top image of this post (with the full poster appearing down below) - but I have to say, this trailer kinda left me cold.

Oddly enough, this already feels kinda same-y to the first. John Wick versus a bunch of baddies.

I should’ve realized that the movie wouldn’t take too far a leap, but in the footage shown here (which admittingly, isn’t much), the only real advances are in the cast, which now includes Common and Ruby Rose.

The enjoyment of seeing Lawrence Fishburne and Keanu Reeves interact for the first time since the Matrix trilogy is nice, but is it enough goodwill to last an entire movie? I need something more here guys, and knowing that the sequel takes place just one week after the original isn’t necessarily making me think we’re seeing a huge progression.

Perhaps I’m wrong, maybe this will be the action movie to beat in 2017, but right now, my excitement is halted.
