We know that Marvel Studios is moving full steam ahead with their Spider-Man movie due in 2017 (there’s even a list surfacing of possible leads - Spoiler: Bunch of White Dudes!), but what else does Sony have up their sleeve?

Possibly the best idea for a Spider-Man movie in ages.

Announced yesterday at CinemaCon - which is a convention for movie theater owners, not another of the many pop-culture conventions that exist - Sony is moving full speed ahead with an animated Spider-Man film helmed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, they of 21 Jump Street, The LEGO Movie and Clone High fame.

Here’s the official press release:

On July 20, 2018, Phil Lord & Christopher Miller the directors of The Lego Movie, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and 21 and 22 Jump Street, are taking Spider-Man back to his graphic roots with the first-of-its-kind animated Spider-Man feature, it was announced today at CinemaCon by Tom Rothman, chairman of the Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group. The film will exist independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe, all of which are continuing.

Lord & Miller are masterminding the project, writing the treatment and producing the film.

As previously announced, Spider-Man will next appear in a live-action Marvel film from Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (MCU). Sony Pictures will thereafter release the next installment of its $4 billion Spider-Man franchise, on July 28, 2017, a live-action film being produced by Kevin Feige at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. The animated film from Lord & Miller, dated July 20, 2018, has Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and Pascal also serving as producers.

Really, my only concern? This is the first Lord and Miller project that sounds like a GOOD idea on paper! As I say like a broken record about them, their entire career has been built around making amazing, absurd pop-culture masterpieces out of absolutely awful ideas. And in this instance - we have Lord and Miller working on something that I’m excited about just from a few paragraphs!

We’ll see how it comes together. I know that I’m waiting with bated breath. It’s not often that some of my favorite creators get to work on my favorite fictional character of all time. There are so many things to consider - the visual style, the sense of humor (this will undoubtedly be the most quippy on-screen Spider-Man yet), and also how self-aware the movie is - given how Lord and Miller do their projects, anything with the troubled history of Spider-Man films is probably on the table for skewering.

The as yet untitled Spider-Man animated film hits theaters on July 20, 2018.
