Literally decades of rumor and scuttlebutt came to an end today, as we officially have a new, third Ghostbusters film.

No, it’s not Ghostbusters 3, as Dan Aykroyd has sworn for years would be coming (the idea of which, thankfully, seemed to pass along with Harold Ramis last year) - it’s the all-female Ghostbusters reboot, as helmed by director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids).

Many had wondered if Feig’s interpretation - featuring a new generation of paranormal investigators - would end up stuck in the same development hell as Aykroyd’s many ideas, but with a well-timed tweet, Feig has confirmed his cast, and now, a few hours later, we have the official release date as well.

For those not familiar with the actresses pictured, this seems to confirm reports that the new foursome battling the spirits of the undead are Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids), Melissa McCarthy (The Heat) and current Saturday Night Live cast members Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones.

This marks the first time Feig and Wiig have worked together since the career-making Bridesmaids, and a huge moment for the careers of McKinnon and Jones, who have been making names for themselves in Studio 8H the past few years. I’m particularly excited to see McCarthy working with Feig again, as she seems a bit lost on film without him, resulting in the subpar comedies Tammy and The Identity Thief.

That said, if the rumored script details posted earlier today at HitFix are true, the movie has a long way to go, in my eyes. The flick sounds a bit too tied to the past - and it could hurt this new Ghostbusters if it’s dripping with nostalgia. I especially question the choice of hopeful casting for the villain.

Never the less, the movie is on the right foot with the perfect mix of comedic actresses - two names, two on the verge. Lets just hope the final flick sticks the landing. They’ve got two and a half years to do it.

Ghostbusters hits theaters on July 22, 2016.
