For fans of movies, 2014 was an amazing year.

While there were some high profile issues (The Interview), movies that didn’t live up to their billing (The Amazing Spider-Man 3), or movies that were just plain bad (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) - we were amazed by films that either had a tremendous backstory (Boyhood), movies that shouldn’t have been as great as they were (The LEGO Movie), or movies that even the most devout fans doubted (Guardians of the Galaxy).

In short, it was a great time to enjoy film.

2015 looks to be just as amazing, and to give us a taste of the flicks we’ll be flocking to, I wanted to do this breakdown of the movies I believe will be worth seeing next year. I’ll link trailers where applicable.

All dates are from the Wikipedia “2015 In Film" Page and are subject to change

January 2015

January 9th: Taken 3 C’mon - there’s no chance this movie will be the traditional meaning of “good", but if you don’t want to start your 2015 by watching Liam Neeson kick peoples asses, I don’t know that we can be friends.

February 2015

February 6th: Jupiter Ascending Originally set for a Summer 2014 bow, this film from the Wachowski Brothers (The Matrix, Cloud Atlas) is sort of a sci-fi Snow White, with Channing Tatum as a wolfman of some variety. Critics have disliked the Wachowski’s last two movies, but my complete enjoyment of them tells me I may be one of the few defending this movie in 2015.

February 13th: Kingsman: The Secret Service Another 2014 film pushed into 2015, Kingsman is directed by Matthew Vaughn, who looks to take another less-than-stellar Mark Millar comic (in this case, The Secret Service), and make it a great film, a’la Kick-Ass. This has already had a number of screenings, which have described the film as a brutal, modern take on the James Bond spy genre. I’m hoping this is as good as the first Kick-Ass, and not as bad as Kick-Ass 2.

February 20th: Hot Tub Time Machine 2 I enjoyed the first film a surprising amount, and I think the addition of Adam Scott to the cast could help the flick - but lets be honest, no one was screaming for a sequel here.

March 2015

March 6th: Chappie The latest film from Neill Blomkamp (District 9) looks to be a surreal tale of a police robot turned soft. Decidedly more in his wheelhouse than the less-than-warmly received Elysium, Blomkamp could win sci-fi fans back with this quirky looking film.

March 27th: Get Hard It’s two of the biggest comedic actors in the world today - Will Ferrell & Kevin Hart - in a prison comedy together. I can’t think of any prison comedies that have worked, but this will probably be HUGE either way.

April 2015

April 3rd: Furious 7 Since the soft-reboot of Fast Five, the Fast & Furious franchise has become one of my favorite guilty pleasures. Pushed nearly a year ahead after the tragic death of Paul Walker, the first trailer shows that the seventh installment looks as great (and ridiculous) as ever. Is it too much to ask that they end the series here?

May 2015

May 1st: Avengers: Age of Ultron There doesn’t even need to be words here. You’re reading this site? You’re seeing this. This movie will be HUGE.

May 15th: Mad Max: Fury Road Honestly, I just wanted an excuse to watch the trailer again. The first Mad Max film in nearly 30 years, Fury Road looks to be one of the most insane action films to ever be contained to the silver screen. A dark horse candidate for movie of the summer.

May 15th: Pitch Perfect 2 The first Pitch Perfect was a surprise joy, and the sequel looks to continue where the first left off. Let us now all submit ourselves to Anna Kendrick, blockbuster movie star.

May 22nd: Tomorrowland Brad Bird’s latest, Tomorrowland, has been shrouded in secrecy from day one, but with the release of the first teaser trailer, the film looks to be a sci-fi fantasy joy. If you haven’t watched the teaser yet, do so - and enjoy the goosebumps.

May 29th: San Andreas THE ROCK FIGHTS AN EARTHQUAKE. THE ROCK FIGHTS AN EARTHQUAKE. HOW YOU GONNA EFF WITH THAT?

June 2015

June 12th: Jurassic World How people disliked this trailer is beyond me. Jurassic World is looking like an absolute blast of a film, mixing Jurassic Park nostalgia with modern-day blockbuster filmmaking. Plus, y’know, the Chris Praptor Posse.

June 19th: Inside Out The first of two Pixar films this year, Inside Out may have a touch of Herman’s Head, but looks to be a great original film from the amazing animation team.

June 26th: Ted 2 I’m a bit ashamed to admit how much I enjoyed Ted. You have me for the sequel, McFarlane. Don’t make me regret it.

July 2015

July 1st: Terminator: Genisys The title is stupid. The first promo photos were awful. But that first trailer? Not too bad. Could either be an interesting re-birth for the franchise, or a movie that fans bitch about forever. But they said that about Terminator Salvation too, and we seem to have mostly forgotten about it.

July 17th: Ant-Man How do you follow Guardians of the Galaxy? With an even LONGER shot. Ant-Man has never been a beloved hero, even in the pages of the comics, and yet, here we are with a film about to launch. Better known at this point for its director troubles, Ant-Man has an amazing cast - but is that all the movie will be known for? We’ll see.

July 17th: Trainwreck Take comedy director king Judd Apatow. Take reigning comedy queen Amy Schumer. Combine in a film. It’s a combination that I have to see for myself. After all, I’m one of the few people who loved Funny People AND This Is 40.

July 24th: Pixels Described as Ghostbusters meets 1980’s Arcade Games, I’m not exactly proud to have an Adam Sandler movie on my list (despite just defending one), but I have to see how this turns out - if only for how amazing Peter Dinklage looks.

August 2015

August 7th: The Fantastic Four While this is pretty clearly not going to be the Fantastic Four we’re used to, the cast is made up of some of my favorite young talent going (Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, Miles Teller), and after Chronicle, I’m willing to see any movie Josh Trank wants to make.

August 14th: The Man from U.N.C.L.E. I have absolutely no reverence for the television series that this movie is based on, but from the first image, released just yesterday, I am all in. A super stylish retro spy flick from THE man in British crime films, Guy Ritchie, starring Superman and the Winkelvoss Twins himself? $12 is yours, movie theater.

September 2015

Nothing. So far.

October 2015

October 16th: Crimson Peak I don’t know about you, but a victorian era horror film from Guillermo Del Toro is exactly how I want to spend my Halloween.

November 2015

November 6th: SPECTRE The revived Bond franchise continues with Daniel Craig’s fourth appearance as James Bond. Yes, the Sony leak told us the script needs work, but with Christoph Waltz as the main villain, I have to see this if only to see if Waltz can chew up an entire IMAX-sized screen with his infectious evil joy.

November 20th: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 I admit, I haven’t seen Part 1, yet, but based on how much I’ve enjoyed the first two installments of the dystopian JLaw franchise, I know that I’m going to have to finish the set.

November 25th: The Good Dinosaur The second Pixar movie of the year (holy crap we get TWO!), The Good Dinosaur has had a rough road to the big screen, but considering the last time one of their movies had a directorial replacement, we got Ratatoullie, I think this going to work out just fine.

November 25th: The Martian Ridley Scott directing one of the coolest books I’ve read this year? All in.

December 2015

December 18th: Star Wars: The Force Awakens Indie auteur JJ Abrams returns to his mumblecore roots with this film about family, hope, life and laughter.

December 25th: The Hateful Eight I don’t like me a western. I do like me a Quentin Tarantino movie. This ticket was bought before I even knew the title.

December 25th: Mission: Impossible 5 I’ve really enjoyed pretty much EVERY installment of this franchise, and I’m willing to bet the 5th time will be no different.

That’s twenty-nine movies that I already am looking forward to next year, and that’s not including movies that I haven’t seen trailers for yet, movies that blow people away at Sundance this year and get Fall releases, or any other surprises. It also doesn’t include the 2014 movies that I haven’t seen yet and will in 2015. (You can look at my Letterboxd account for that.)

It’s going to be a good year in movies. I can feel it.

What are you most looking forward to? Sound off in the comments.
