The race to Summer 2015 is on, with a hotly anticipated showdown between Disney/Marvel Studios The Avengers 2 and Warner Bros/DC Entertainment’s Justice League looking to go head to head.

The rumor mill started firing on all cylinders last week as HitFix.com reported that Joseph Gordon-Levitt was being courted to return as Batman in the DC superhero team up, and today, Latino Review (who correctly reported that a Guardians of the Galaxy movie was in development) claims to know who the villain is.

Brace yourself, folks…

…it’s Darkseid.

And that…really underwhelms me.  As bad ass as Darkseid is, this is going to make Justice League look like a “me too!” film. Even more than it already is.

Here’s the problem right now with the WB playbook for the DC Theatrical Universe. They want all of the glory with none of the work.

Marvel Studios took four years and 6 movies to build up to The Avengers. Each hero was given a shot, made to look important, and then the threat of The Avengers looked huge because all of these heroes were banding together for the first time.

In the case of DC? Green Lantern failed, then Christopher Nolan (rightfully) didn’t want to open up his universe to play. Man of Steel may relaunch Superman well (and is looking to be the catalyst of the DC Theatrical Universe), but that would really be all they would have going into Justice League.

Sure, much of the world knows who Batman, Aquaman, The Flash and Wonder Woman are, but the grand team up has yet to be earned.  Add that with The Avengers 2 having Thanos as a villain, and you will have   WB/DC looking like they’re just trying to rip off The Avengers.

Yes, Thanos really was Marvel’s attempt to have a Darkseid-esq character, but to the general public, he was seen on-screen in The Avengers first, and…well, this is really going to make DC look like the RC Cola to Marvel’s Coke. Not even a Pepsi.

We’ll see if this pans out. In my opinion though? They need a new villain and FAST.
