Back once again like a bad habit, Awesome-O-Rama is here to tell you what’s worth picking up in the world of media this week.

And unlike the past few, this is a huge week.  I kinda wonder, looking at the next few weeks, couldn’t some of these releases have been spread out through the month?  I make an alright wage, and admittingly spend more than most on movies/music/etc., and this even had ME wanting to tap out.  Come on studios – think through the whole month!

Either way, let’s do this thing!

Moon
A movie so fantastic and underrated that even it’s own studio is neglecting it for Oscars.  This “hard sci-fi” film from first-time director Duncan Jones is a one-man acting tour-de-force by Sam Rockwell, and is one of the most intriguing and enthralling movies I’ve seen in years.  If you liked Sunshine, you’re sure to love this, as it falls into the realm of ‘possible’ sci-fi realities – but Moon doesn’t have the weak ending which tends to split opinion on Sunshine.  If I can recommend any one release in particular this week – it’d be this one. Trust me.

The Brothers Bloom
Written and directed by Rian Johnson, the creator of the underappreciated Brick, The Brothers Bloom is another film who’s release fell under people’s radars this past summer.  Heck, even I, who had really wanted to see it, forgot all about it.  But that’s what home video is for!  Bloom is an absolute blast of a heist comedy, shot beautifully with an amazing script.  And fellas, if you don’t walk away from this with a Rachel Weisz crush, check your pulse – you may be dead.

The Hurt Locker
Confession time! I haven’t seen The Hurt Locker yet.  And considering it’s getting all the Oscar hype this year, I think I need to rectify that.  The tale of a bomb detonation team in Iraq, this film is grim, gritty, tense, and is said to be possibly one of the best and most realistic depictions of military life in the modern age.  I’ll have to see it for myself to judge – but it’s worth asking out loud: How interesting would it be if Kathryn Bigelow (who directed The Hurt Locker) is pitted against her ex-husband, James Cameron come Oscar time?

Big Fan
Here’s my clear and noticable bias showing – this flick is the dramatic lead debut for Patton Oswalt.  But don’t let my bias stop you, all inclinations is Patton brought it in this one.  Starring my favorite stand up comedian as an obsessed football fan, the film delves into what happens when your passions turn against you, and you’re forced to decide between your hobbies and the real world.  An interesting flick in concept, made even more believable as Patton (like any true nerd) understands nerdly obsession.  Question to the studio – why is this only available in standard def?

That’s it for this week!  See you next week with a list of more media worth checking out!

We’re just mere days removed from the announcement that Sony will be moving forward with a relaunch of the Spider-Man franchise in 2012.

However, that hasn’t stopped Sony from making moves.  Apparently, the script for the reboot was written months ago (as it was to be the framework for Spidey 5 & 6), so now they’re going through the difficult process of finding a director.

Looks like they already have one in mind – Marc Webb.

I know, you’re already wondering who the hell that is.  Let me tell you!

Marc Webb was primarily known for directing music videos, but made a big splash last year with his directoral debut, one of my favorite movies of 2009, (500) Days of Summer.

Webb has shown with (500) Days that he is more than capable of handling the pathos of Peter Parker, but can he handle the action, and keep Pete from feeling like a whiny asshole? We’ll see if he officially gets the gig. At least he already has the perfect last name for the job.

Also of note – in what shouldn’t come as a surprise in this post Avatar world, Sony is looking for Spidey 2012 to be in 3D.  Personally, I could go for some 3D web swinging sequences.  I just hope they’re focusing on making the movie worthwhile first, before they work in shinies like 3D.

As the weeks count down until the Ryan Reynolds starring adaptation of Green Lantern starts filming in Australia, all the big announcements are starting to get made.

And the latest – the identity of the main villain.

In the case of this film, it seems they’re going the Batman Begins route of starting the franchise with a B-list villain, by not using Sinestro, but instead the lesser known Dr. Hector Hammond, a character so obscure that I don’t even know who that is!

Dr. Hammond, a character given psychic powers by a meteor dropped when dying GL Abin Sur comes to Earth to give Hal Jordan his ring, fits heavily into the latest revision of the Green Lantern origin in the comics, which explains his appearance here.

The actor rumored to be playing Hammond? Why, Peter Sarsgaard, of course!

Sarsgaard has long been one of my favorite actors, and it’ll be nice to see him in a tentpole summer flick like Green Lantern.

Here’s a shocking announcement.

After rumors that included Anne Hathaway as the Black Cat and John Malkovich as the Vulture (which was actually ‘confirmed’ earlier today), Sony Pictures has officially announced that all work on Spider-Man 4 has been scrapped.

Further more, Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire have been dropped from the project, ditto Kirsten Dunst, and Sony is now fast tracking a relaunch of the Spider-Man franchise to hit theaters in 2012.

This is a major surprise announcement, especially considering the film was to begin shooting later this year, but given the rumors surrounding the project, I can’t say I’m completely shocked.  Word was Raimi was once again battling Sony over control of the picture (he wanted the Vulture, they didn’t), and as history shows, making Raimi do something he has no interest in makes for a bad film.  In case you don’t know what I’m referencing – Raimi was “asked” to add Venom to the 3rd Spider-Man film. You can do the rest of the math here.

Honestly though, I’m quite excited for this reboot.  Fans everywhere are starting to worry about the “high school” part of the plan, as mentioned in the press release (full text of which is after the cut), but I truly doubt that they’re going to Twilight up the Spider-Man franchise.  Sony is too smart for that.

After Spider-Man 3‘s critical (but not financial) failure, I’ve mentioned to darn near anyone who would listen to me (good thing I have a blog now, eh?) that what the franchise truly needed was a James Bond-esq refreshing.  Tobey & Kirsten looked bored as hell to be playing Spidey and MJ, and honestly, if Raimi felt so embattled against Sony Pictures, it’s best for all parties if he does leave.

Sure, not every reboot is successful, but I hold out that we could see a JJ Abrams-Trek/Nolan Batman style refresh of the Spider-Man film series that’s better for everyone.  And if they go high school? They only need to look at Brian Michael Bendis’ amazing run on Ultimate Spider-Man to find stories to pilfer from.

So who do I think should fill in the tights? Of today’s Hollywood, Anton Yelchin, Joseph-Gordon Levitt, James McAvoy and Jake Gyllenhaal come to mind, but honestly – I want a left field selection. Maybe even Jesse Eisenberg?

Any way you cut it, this could be a very exciting new lease for the Spider-Man movie franchise.  Strap in and get ready – it’s going to get interesting.

Thundering across the interweb, the first official trailer for The A-Team has hit many a website (including now this one), and honestly – it’s pretty underwhelming.

While I was and am somewhat excited for the diverse cast, with Bradley Cooper, Liam Neeson, Sharlto Copley and MMA fighter “Rampage” Jackson, this trailer has absolutely zero sense of fun, taking what could’ve been a tongue in cheek trailer, reprising the classic voiceover and making it a super serious, kinda bland mess.

Hopefully this isn’t true of the final film, which is due to hit theaters on June 11, 2010.

TREK 2 in 2012!

While there isn’t more information than the plan and date, Paramount Pictures has officially announced the release date to the sequel to JJ Abrams’ super successful relaunch of the Star Trek franchise.

Set for release on June 29, 2012, Star Trek 2 (or whatever they call it) thus far has yet to have JJ Abrams attached to it, but most if not all of the cast is attached for at least two more films.

So at the least, we’ll get Chris Pine and Zach Quinto helming Star Trek into the possible end of time.

Well, this sure looks interesting!

This is the first I’ve heard of Jackbooks On Whitehall, but considering the rather unique way the flick was put together, I have to say I’m all sorts of intrigued.

First and foremost, it’s an alternative reality version of World War II.

Namely, one where “which the Nazis hatch a plan to invade England by drilling under the English Channel and into the heart of London. But with the entire British army stuck in Dunkirk, the whole country must band together to prevent a full-on invasion.”

Here’s the very interesting part though – the entire movie appears to have been shot using 1970′s style GI Joe’s or something!

The voice cast sounds pretty excellent, including Ewan McGregor, Tom Wilkinson, Rosamund Pike, & Alan Cumming, but overall, the unique way this has been put together is what has me drooling.

I’ve included a full gallery of stills below.

I swear, whoever is handling the marketing for Kick-Ass has certainly learned a thing or two from The Dark Knight.

Much like Knight, Kick-Ass has had it’s name across the web early and often.  Between comic con appearances, slow leaking of media like web exclusive trailers and posters, and it’s now culminated in the release of the above full trailer for the flick.

It’s hard to believe this is the first time we’ve seen the story laid out properly, but the trailer is SUPER effective at selling the flick. I personally cannot wait.

While the official release date is on April 16th, it’s worth noting that Kick-Ass will be kicking off the theatrical portion of SXSW this year.  A show, which one day, I will go to.  I swear it.
