God of War III Slurpees Deliver What Gamers Need More Of…Sugary Drinks!

Anyone who knows me personally knows that the cups in my house are, at least in majority, made up of the collectors style Slurpee cups.

What can I say, I love them.  Great designs, last long, and they add a touch of nerd to my decor.

So it’s with that said, that I admit that I watch for every series of Slurpee cups, to see what will be added to the mix.  I’m ashamed to say I was never able to find Domo cups, but this February, I’ll be damned if I won’t be adding these awesome God of War III Slurpee Cups to my collection!

Based on the amazing Playstation game series (and, more importantly, timed to the release of the Playstation 3 sequel), all 4 cups come with images of Kratos, as well as codes for downloadable in game content.

If that wasn’t enough, 7-Eleven has dug up a new flavor of slurpee, called “Kratos’ Fury”.  What does fury taste like? Blackberries and lime apparently.  Delicious, berry flavored fury. Can’t wait.

New Muppet Movie Gets Possibly The Best Direction Choice Ever

Hot on the heels of the decision to make Jason Segel the writer of the new Muppet film, it appears if Disney has made a pick for the director: James Bobin.

Name doesn’t ring a bell? He’s the co-creator of Flight of the Conchords – and if he does for the Muppets what he did for the 4th best folk duo from New Zealand, the new Muppet film might have what it takes to be a hit.

Imagine if you will, the surreal asides and artsy music video interludes from FotC mixed with singing, dancing muppets. Excited? If you aren’t, you should check to see if you have a soul.

This assignment isn’t 100% confirmed yet, as Bobin is apparently mulling over other offers, but if this goes through, I would be a very happy nerdy blogger.

AWESOME-O-RAMA: January 17-31

Folks, I’m terribly sorry, I’ve been an unworthy blogger as of late.

With all the work heading to Super Art Fight 6 (and then all of the post show work, including nightly blog posts on the site), Blast-O-Rama was decidedly a #2 on the priority list.

Ergo, I missed out on TWO WEEKS of Awesome-O-Rama!

Don’t worry though, I kept a list of what was awesome, and while it was sort of weak on the movie side of things, it was very high on the gaming radness quotient. Let’s take a look, shall we?

The Invention of Lying
Perhaps the first fully realized American film created by Ricky Gervais, The Invention of Lying puts together a very unique world for it’s backdrop, one where people are 100% honest, 100% of the time.  It’s one that is mined to pitch perfect comedic perfection – to a point.  Without going into too much detail, the movie takes a left turn for the serious, in looking into what is considered by some as the biggest lie of all time – a very gutsy move.  But then, perhaps to appease the studio or the audience -the movie swerves back into the traditional romantic comedy ending.  Despite a stellar cast and a truly astonishing world for the film to take place, it’s these abrupt moves which could leave you cold…which is why this is a highly recommended rental.

Whip It
You know, I had a hunch I would enjoy this. But even with that said, when I sat down to watch it, it wound up as a pleasant surprise.  The directorial debut of Drew Barrymore with Ellen Page in the lead role, is possibly the best commercial for roller derby ever made, painting the sport as one full of eccentric and strong women, but it wisely uses the sport as the backdrop for a smartly written coming of age tale.  It’s a really fun flick, with a really stellar cast, and I enjoyed every minute. Check it out.

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom
Hi kids! Need a reason to turn on your Wii other than New Super Mario Bros?  Did you love Marvel Vs. Capcom? (If your answer was no – WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?) Do you love esoteric, surreal Japanese characters you may or may not be familiar with? If you answered yes to one or all of these questions, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom may be the game for you!  A frantically paced fever dream of a fighting game, this may be the craziest game ever to come to the Wii, and up until recently was THE reason to mod your system to import.  But now the game is released in the Americas, so there’s but one question left to ask – what’s your excuse?

Mass Effect 2
I never played Mass Effect 1. But the hype surrounding that game and it’s follow up is enough to make me declare ME2 as simply awesome.  With an amazing cast of characters, stunningly realized worlds and alien races, and a superb decision making engine, Mass Effect 2 may be a game that you don’t simply play – it’s one you experience.  Now only if I could find the time to clear on my schedule to play though both of them…

Hope you enjoyed this look at the past two weeks of Awesome, and be sure to look here on Tuesday, as I look at this week’s awesome.

MY POOR WALLET: Hot Toys Lt. Aldo Raine

So what happens when you take one of my favorite movies of 2009, one of my favorite characters from the film (portrayed by one of my favorite actors) and hand it over to the team responsible for some of the craziest high-end collectible figures in the world?

You end up with a sad wallet, as Hot Toys has done it again with this absolutely stunning 1/6th scale figure of Brad Pitt as Lt. Aldo Raine from Inglourious Basterds.

Seriously, this is some stunning stunning work. As usual with these sorts of things, I’ve included a full gallery below – get ready to drool, fellow nerds!

You Wouldn’t Think It’d Work, But…WU VS. BEATLES!

Credit to this one goes to my boy Rosscott.

Taking one band I absolutely love, and mix them with the group I’ve dubbed the hip hop equivelent of the X-Men, and you have this – one of the craziest mashups ever released.

It’s Wu Tang vs. the BeatlesEnter The Magical Mystery Chambers, and some way, some how, it works REALLY well.

I blame the excellent mixing from Tom Caruana, who really did a bang up job on these tracks.  This is one mashup that can sit on the quality shelf next to The Grey Album and Yoshimi vs. The Hip Hop Robots. Amazing, catchy, stuff.

Oh Snap! GREEN LANTERN Concept Art Has Hit The Web!

Considering it’s scheduled to start filming any day now, you can count this post as the beginning of the leaks of Green Lantern related content.

I can’t affirm the validity of this concept art, as the sources aren’t your typical outlets, but if the GL movie holds up to this artistic style, alongside a fun Ryan Reynolds performance and solid direction by Martin Campbell, Green Lantern could be an amazing flick.

First, here’s a look at concept art of Abin Sur and Toma-Re.

Secondly, a great look at some concept for Kilowog, which might be the images that tell me that the flick will be OK.

Green Lantern is tentatively scheduled to hit theaters on June 17, 2011.

Two New Posters For AVATAR – The Nick One!

As we’re getting closer to Summer 2010, we’re finally getting more of a glimpse of the other Avatar film, The Last Airbender, M. Night Shammy’s adaptation of the Nickelodeon toon.

These two new posters (thanks to Yahoo!) still don’t really give us any great inclination as to how accurate of an adaptation this would be, nor stave off the fears of whitewashing, but they’re slick posters as is.

I still wonder – can Shyamalan helm a film of this scale or size?  We’ll find out this summer, when The Last Airbender hits theaters.

Next From George Lucas – A MUSICAL!

In this post Avatar world, you had to know that George Lucas wasn’t going to stay dormant for long.

And he’s raring back, determined to take back Lucasfilm’s crown as the king of the CGI action adventure film with -

*re-reads story*

a….a CGI musical? About fairies?!

What the HELL, George?!

Not much is really known about the project, aside from it’s being directed by Kevin Monroe (TMNT) and written by the man who wrote Elf – but seriously, what in the Sam Hill is this all about?

Stay tuned to Blast-O-Rama for my eventual fanboyish devotion, love, and positive review of the Untitled George Lucas Fairy Musical as it rushes towards breaking the worldwide cinema box office record.

TOMORROW NIGHT: Super Art Fight 6!

As I’ve grown a bit of a home here at Blast-O-Rama, I’ve realized that I far too rarely discuss my other main project at this time, Super Art Fight.

To get the major shill out of the way first, our next show, appropriately titled “Super Art Fight 6″ is tomorrow night, January 23rd, at the Ottobar in downtown Baltimore.  Doors are at 8, show starts at 9, and tickets are just $10.

And honestly, this is the most excited I’ve ever been for one of these shows.  I’ve had the honor and pleasure to  be a part of these events from their genesis almost 2 years ago, and to not just be a major part of what occurs behind the scenes, but also to be one half of the commentary/hosting team (along side my brother from another mother, Ross Nover), is possibly the most fulfilling project I’ve ever worked on.

What makes this show really special for me, however? It’s probably the best mix of talent and matchups we’ve ever had.

One of the many jobs I serve behind the scenes is that of the matchmaker for the cards.  I’m the one who once we have a finalized list of talent, pairs talent together for the hopes of the best overall show.  Sometimes we’ve had some pairings who clashed artistically, sometimes the winners a bit too obvious (someone wildly popular versus someone just getting their footing), but I think this card, is beyond the shadow of a doubt, one of the strongest we’ve ever had the pleasure to present.

And how do I know it’s going to be good?  Honestly, for as much as I enjoy the excitement and stress of serving as one of our hosts, this card – more than any that came before it – I long to experience it as an audience member.  I honestly cannot say for sure who will win any of them, and that, my friends, is exciting.

I’m not going to leave you with a hard sell.  I’m just going to say this.

Tomorrow night, if you’re in the Baltimore area, and you are looking for something to do, head down to the Ottobar and check out Super Art Fight.  We’re going to have some great artists on tap, probably the most interesting musical act we’ve ever booked in The Dirty Marmaduke Flute Squad, and no matter what happens during the show, I can pretty much guarantee that you’ll leave with a smile on your face.

See you all tomorrow night.

More Gorillaz Album Details Including The First Single!

Man, the freaking gate flew open today when it comes to Gorillaz!

As I’ve discussed previously on here, their new album Plastic Beach will be released this year, and we have the first single (“Stylo”, feat. Mos Def & Bobby Womack), the release date, the real tracklist and what I believe is the album art (Pitchfork didn’t elaborate).

First, the album cover, which you see at the top of the post, literally, a plastic beach.

Second, here’s the full tracklisting, dramatically different from the one I posted earlier in the month:

01 Orchestral Intro (ft. Sinfonia ViVA)
02 Welcome to the World of the Plastic Beach (ft. Snoop Dogg and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble)
03 White Flag (ft. Kano, Bashy, and the National Orchestra for Arabic Music)
04 Rhinestone Eyes
05 Stylo (ft. Bobby Womack and Mos Def)
06 Superfast Jellyfish (ft. Gruff Rhys and De La Soul)
07 Empire Ants (ft. Little Dragon)
08 Glitter Freeze (ft. Mark E Smith)
09 Some Kind Of Nature (ft. Lou Reed)
10 On Melancholy Hill
11 Broken
12 Sweepstakes (ft. Mos Def and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble)
13 Plastic Beach (ft. Mick Jones and Paul Simonon)
14 To Binge (ft. Little Dragon)
15 Cloud of Unknowing (ft. Bobby Womack and Sinfonia ViVA)
16 Pirate Jet

Last, but not least, why you’re really here – “Stylo”.

The song can’t be embedded, but you can check it out on YouTube here.

It’s a strange, almost 80’s electro clash type of song.  I can’t say I dig it (yet), but I guess we’ll see how the whole album goes.

Plastic Beach hits shelves on March 9th.
