The continued rush towards 2010 in the movie industry continues, as we get our first look at Ridley Scott’s adaptation of Robin Hood.
With Russell Crowe in the lead role of the infamous thief who stole from the rich and gave to the poor, my initial feelings towards the project had me pretty excited, having just rewatched Gladiator recently. But watching the above trailer, with random metal added to the action…left kind of a bad taste in my mouth. Still, with a stellar cast (also featuring the always great Cate Blanchett) and steady direction, this may hold out. I hope.
Will the movie overcome the marketing? Or are they adding ice cream to a bag of manure? We’ll find out when Robin Hood hits theaters next year.
For a taste of the movie without AESOME METAL!!!!11, I’ve included the first stills from the flick below.

I think it’s got some big shoes to fill.
I really mean it when I say, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves was a great movie and is probably my favorite movie of all time. Yes, despite Kevin Costner’s dry acting and wet butt, and of course the involvement of Bryan Adams…
It had a talent filled cast in Morgan Freeman, Christian Slater, Michael McShane, Alan Rickman, and a cameo by Sean Connery (aka the real James Bond). The plot was compelling and completely believable. The sets and costumes were perfectly detailed. It’s soundtrack was epic and exciting.
Elements of humor in the movie can still make me chuckle almost two decades later. Case in point, Robin and Azeem sitting on the business end of a catapult. Robin calls to Will Scarlet to throw the lever. The heroes ascend, just over the stone wall ahead. Cut back to Will Scarlet – “F*ck me, he cleared it!”
Classic.
Anyway, enough of me reliving my childhood adoration of this super-sweet adventure movie. I really liked Gladiator, but I think this movie is going to have a bum-wrap because of it. There’s no doubt that Russel Crowe is a strong actor, much stronger than Kevin Costner, but do we really need another period piece from one of the same dudes who starred in one of the greatest period pieces of all time? I don’t know.
Hollywood worries me with it’s trend of “Hey, this was a successful movie, let’s make another one just like it!” These movies tend to be bitter reminders that it’s a business. If you can convince people with the money that you can make them even more money, they’ll let you get away with anything.
I plan to see Ridley Scott’s take on the Sherwood Bandit. I plan on enjoying it. It’s still looking promising, but I just don’t want my heart broken again.
On a side note, Tim Burton, if you fuck up Alice and Wonderland, I will kill you.
