In an announcement that shouldn’t surprise many who followed the behind the scenes difficulties of the second season of the show, Flight of the Conchords have officially announced their HBO series will not be returning for a third season, and is effectively, canceled. Here’s how they announced it on their site:

Bret, Jemaine and James (co-creator/director) said “we’ve noticed the less we say about the future of the show, the more people want to talk about it, so in an effort to reverse this trend we are today announcing that we won’t be returning for a 3rd season. We’re very proud of the two seasons we made and we like the way the show ended. We’d like to thank everyone who helped make the show and also everyone who watched it. While the characters Bret and Jemaine will no longer be around, the real Bret and Jemaine will continue to exist.

It’s a total bummer, as the main issue when writing the second season was creating new songs for each episode, where as the first season was written around years-old, road tested material.  I personally would’ve been fine with a song-less third season, focusing on the band as characters, but alas, Bret and Jemaine have decided to close the curtain.

Best of luck to the Conchords gang. I’m sure whatever they do next will be awesome. And hey, if you loved the show, the DVDs still exist!
