Dreamworks Wants You To TRAIN A DRAGON!

Fresh off the internet wires over at Yahoo comes the above first look at Dreamworks latest 3d-animated opus, How To Train Your Dragon.

Based off of the 2003 children’s book of the same title, the Chris Sanders directed picture…

CHRIS “WAS GONNA MAKE A MOVIE CALLED AMERICAN DOG WHICH LOOKED AMAZING THEN DISNEY TOOK IT FROM ME AND CALLED IT BOLT” SANDERS?!

CHRIS “ONLY GUY WHO GOT A CHARACTER DESIGN SOLD BACK TO HIM BY DISNEY WHICH IS NOW A WEBCOMIC” SANDERS!?

Holy shit. I’m actually excited for this!

And looking at the voice cast, it sounds even better! You’ve got the Apatow trio of Jay Baruchel (as lead) along Jonah Hill and Christopher Mintz-Plasse; plus Gerard Butler…and did I hear Craig Ferguson in the trailer? Awesome!

You know, to use a (very vulgar) analogy that my boy Jami likes to implement on a regular basis, Dreamworks Animation has long been the “funny fat friend” to Pixar Animations “hot chick you want to fuck”, but with their past two films (Kung Fu Panda and Monsters vs. Aliens respectively), they’ve fast been building an admirable counterpoint of solid animation…and I think this movie might just continue the trend.  Of course, I’m sure Shrek Goes Forth will come out in 2011, and be so full of only-funny-in-the-moment pop culture gags that I will completely regret writing this paragraph.

I really like the almost salamander-esq design of the baby dragon, and I’m psyched about the vikings.

God damnit, I’m excited for a Dreamworks movie!

How To Train Your Dragon is due to hit theaters in IMAX3D on March 26th, 2010.

Apparently Someone Broke Bill Cosby!

This past weekend, famous actor, comedian and sweater connoisseur Bill Cosby was on ESPN for his comments on the Ohio and Temple game.

Of course, Bill being Bill, and Bill inching towards senility at the age of 72, his comments were…shall we say…unique.

I wonder if Bill realizes how close he is coming to approaching being a living approximation of all of those YTMND versions of him. (This one, in particular.)

Can PRINCE OF PERSIA Break The Curse?

Let’s be honest here. All video game movies suck.

Super Mario Brothers – Sucked.

Tomb Raider 1 & 2 – Sucked.

Street Fighter – Sucked. Both times.

Heck, one of the worst movies ever on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer, Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever is based on an obscure Game Boy Advanced game. Even the best example of a video game adaptation, Doom, was mediocre at best.

Add a super whitewashed cast (including the kinda awkward looking Jake Gyllenhaal), and there is a lot that Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has standing up against it on the road to quality as it heads into theaters on May 28th of next year.

Now that we have the first official trailer, embedded above, I can’t say I’m feeling that much more confident about it.

Sure, the effects and stunts look downright jawdropping, and the cinematography is out of this world, but it feels like the bastard child of the Mummy/Scorpion King series, with a taste of Pirates of the Carribbean mixed into it.

As a fan of the Persia games over the years, I would love to be proven wrong and see a decent video game based movie for once, but this trailer isn’t instilling me with hopes of the flick being more than some mindless eye candy.

We’ll find out for sure when Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time hits on May 28th, 2010.

My Poor Wallet: TOUMA Star Wars Keychains

Get ready for possibly the most adorable interpretation of the Star Wars cast ever, as Japanese designer toy company Toumart puts their spin on the beloved sci-fi cast with these TOUMA Star Wars Keychains.

Featuring 10 characters from the Original Trilogy, these keychains include cutesy interpretations of Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, R2D2, C-3PO, Yoda, a (presumably sober) Ewok, Darth Vader and an ever trusty Stormtrooper.  And they’re just flat out awesome. I love the facial expression on Han, and the contrasting face of his buddy Chewbacca.

Unfortunately, I have no idea how much these keychains will cost OR when they’re do out, just that they’re for now, Japanese exclusives.

Hopefully, Lucasfilm catches wind of how rad these things are, and stocks them in the US store, as they have those awesome lightsaber chopsticks.

Comics Meet Comics In…Comic Form

I’ve never really understood the separation of church and state when it came to comic books and newspaper comics.

I’m not really sure why they’re considered more “cousins” in the art world than say “brother” and “sister”, but the super talented artist Ryan Dunlavey, he of Action Philosphers fame, has decided to work on throwing the two together, with a series of comic mashups that subvert Sunday newspaper classics in wonderful ways.

I’ve included my favorite above, the Peanuts/X-Men mashup X-Nuts, but there are a slue more in the post linked below, including Dennis the Menace meeting Star Wars to create Phantom The Menace, a Doctor Doom/Peanuts mix, and most hysterically, a combination of Sin City and Nancy.

Extra points for how well Dunlavey emulates each comics respective style. Takes some major talent to pull that off!

It’s Saturday Morning 24/7 At Jaroo!

I’m amazed Hulu weren’t the first one who jumped on this bandwagon, but launching this week is the latest in many a free video-streaming site, the strangely titled Jaroo.com.

What’s their gimmick you ask? Jaroo is built around being a hub for streamable cartoons and other child-aged media.  Thus far they have about 50 shows up, including classics like Inspector Gadget and Captain N & The Game Masters and even some obscure series like Starcom and yes, Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad.

It’s a promising start for the site, but honestly, I think they’re gonna have to grab some content from say, Hanna Barbera, Warner Brothers or Nickelodeon to really grab eyeballs.

Either way though, instant watch Inspector Gadget sounds AWESOME.
